The canals of the English Midlands are today an important leisure resource, offering a freedom to travel slowly and to  stop wherever it pleases, that is rare and valuable in the modern world. However the network of canals radiating out from Birmingham were at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, generating enormous development and wealth.

The Trent and Mersey Canal runs through pleasant countryside to join the broad River Trent near Shardlow.

The Shropshire Union Canal heads north through sparsely populated Shropshire. the nearby  Staffs and Worcs meandering down to the River Severn at Stourport.

The Coventry Canal once served coalfields which have now disappeared under green vegetation.

The Worcester and Birmingham Canal cuts through tunnels and many locks on its descent to Worcester.
The Stratford Canal ends in a basin alongside the famous Theatre on the River Avon.
The Oxford Canal twists and turns through beautiful Oxfordshire countryside and villages.
The Grand Union Canal  joins the two major cities of Birmingham and London.
The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in South Wales is the only remains of a larger network and cruises through the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park.
